Tooth Structure Loss III
Abfractions
Abfractions are “the pathological loss of hard tooth substance caused by biomechanical loading forces. Such loss is thought to be due to flexure and ultimate fatigue of enamel and or dentin at some location distant to the actual point of loading” Simply put, the notches in your tooth at the gumline may be caused by the forces on the teeth. These forces may be from teeth hitting at odd angles or from clenching and grinding. Some feel there are defining characteristics to these erosive lesions that are different from the other causes like improper brushing or diet. Currently there are limited studies that support this concept.
I feel the notches at the gumline of teeth may be caused by many factors or a combination of factors and we will strive to help identify the problem and provide solutions. Filling these areas may become important as they increase in depth.
