Tooth Structure Loss IV
Abrasion
Abasion is defined as the abnormal wearing away of the tooth substance by causes other than mastication (chewing). The notching of the teeth at the gum line, receding gums, and sensitive teeth can all be attributed to incorrect tooth brushing habits. However, to say that they are the sole reason for these conditions would be over-simplifying the situation. Some of these problems can occur on parts of the tooth that are not easily reached by the toothbrush so it is likely the condition is caused by multiple factors. In the next blog, we will discuss erosion.
The number of times you brush per day is not as important as using the proper technique and soft bristles. I am a fan of the automated toothbrushes that help with proper technique and proper amount of brushing time. Ask us about them when you are in for your re-care appointment.
